Le travail pictural et sculptural de Laur P propose une visibilité spéculative des compositions paléo-écologiques en devenir, un espace imaginaire qu’il investigue selon une perspective queer-trans-crip.

 

Dans ses œuvres, des fragments de compositions inter-espèces se compressent à travers un lent procédé d'accrétion, de décomposition et de réémergence. Tout au long de ce processus stratigraphique, il recherche la fossilisation et l’indétermination, tout en portant une attention particulière à la force agentielle des matières qu’il emploie. Cette approche intuitive et taphonomique lui permet de visualiser des enchevêtrements souterrains et topographiques, micro- et macroscopiques, dans lesquels se croisent diverses dimensions temporelles et métaphoriques.

 

En périphérie de considérations éco-critiques concernant les nature-cultures contemporaines et les hantises qui s’y rattachent, les assemblages de fossiles picturaux de Laur P invitent un rapprochement entre la contemplation formelle des matières en association dans son travail et ses intentions entrelacées, c’est-à-dire, perturber les compréhensions spécistes de l’évolution et des phénomènes naturels, troubler la tradition du paysage en tant qu’espace de représentation humaniste de la nature, désorienter les conventions picturales capacitistes, et par conséquent, faire résistance à la myopie anthropocentrique.

 

Laur P est un artiste canadien basé à Toronto. Il poursuit actuellement un doctorat en sciences humaines interdisciplinaires à l’Université Brock, à St. Catharines (Ontario), où il enseigne également la peinture. Il détient une maîtrise en arts visuels (MFA) de l’Université de Guelph (2021) ainsi qu’un baccalauréat en beaux-arts avec grande distinction de l’Université Concordia (2015). Au cours de son parcours universitaire, il a reçu plusieurs distinctions, dont la Bourse d’études supérieures du Canada Joseph-Armand-Bombardier (CRSH, Université de Guelph) et le Prix Betty Goodwin en arts visuels (Université Concordia). Son travail a également bénéficié du soutien du Conseil des arts du Canada. Son travail a récemment été présenté à Montréal (Galerie Nicolas Robert, McClure Gallery, McBride Contemporary), à Toronto (Galerie Nicolas Robert, The Plumb, Birch Contemporary) et à New York (NADA, Sargent’s Daughters). Il a présenté deux expositions individuelles récentes chez Sargent’s Daughters (New York, 2023) et à la Galerie Nicolas Robert (Toronto, 2024). Les œuvres de Laur P font partie des collections du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada, de la Collection McMichael d’art canadien, du Musée des beaux-arts de l’Ontario, de la Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, de Desjardins, d’Hydro-Québec, de la Banque Royale du Canada et de Medcan, entre autres. Il est représenté par la Galerie Nicolas Robert depuis 2018.

Laur P's pictorial and sculptural work offers a speculative visibility of paleo-ecological compositions in becoming, an imaginary space that they investigate from a queer-trans-crip perspective.

 

In his works, fragments of inter-species compositions compress through a slow process of accretion, decomposition and re-emergence. Throughout this stratigraphic process he seeks fossilization and indetermination while paying particular attention to the agential force of the materials they use. This intuitive and taphonomic approach allows him to visualize entanglements that are at once underworldly and topographical, micro- and macroscopic, and in which various temporal and metaphorical dimensions intersect.

 

On the periphery of eco-critical considerations of contemporary nature-cultures and the hauntings they reveal, Laur P’s assemblages of pictorial fossils invite a rapprochement between the formal contemplation of materials that are associated in his work and their intertwined intentions, which are, to disrupt speciesist understandings of evolution and natural phenomena, to disturb the tradition of the landscape as a space for humanistic representation of nature, to disorient ableist pictorial conventions, and therefore to resist anthropocentric myopia.

Laur P is a Canadian artist based in Toronto. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Interdisciplinary Humanities at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, where he also teaches painting. He holds an MFA from the University of Guelph (2021) and a BFA with Great Distinction from Concordia University (2015). Throughout his academic career, he has received several awards, including the Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship (SSHRC, University of Guelph) and the Betty Goodwin Prize in Studio Arts (Concordia University). His work has also been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.

His work has recently been exhibited in Montreal (Galerie Nicolas Robert, McClure Gallery, McBride Contemporary), Toronto (Galerie Nicolas Robert, The Plumb, Birch Contemporary), and New York (NADA, Sargent’s Daughters). He has presented two recent solo exhibitions at Sargent’s Daughters (New York, 2023) and Galerie Nicolas Robert (Toronto, 2024). Laur P’s work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, Desjardins, Hydro-Québec, the Royal Bank of Canada, Medcan, among others. He has been represented by Galerie Nicolas Robert since 2018.
